Hoagies' Blog Hop: If You Only Knew...

If you only knew... To the doctor who sees her when she's well or sick, to the psychologist she talks to about her fears, to the teacher who sees him every day but doesn't really see him, to the grandparents who's expectations were formed in a different generation... What would YOU like to say?  What would you like them to know? What does it pain you not to say out loud?

It doesn't go away when gifted kids grow up.  To the neighbor who only offers small talk, without the depth of meaning you feel?  To the director of the retirement community, who offers only superficial activities but nothing of interest to your parents, or to you? These conversations may never happen in real life, but it's great to to at least articulate among ourselves. Listen and join in!

Don't miss our previous Blog Hops on related topics, including Overexcitabilities (OEs), and Multipotentiality.

What many parents wish the “experts” knew about gifted children by Gail Post in Gifted Challenges
Your child is gifted. And the "experts" don't get it.

Maybe you have spoken with pediatricians or school counselors or therapists or life coaches or experienced teachers and none of them fully get it. They don't understand the intensity or overthinking. They don't appreciate the insidious effect of perfectionism or isolation or "impostor syndrome." They don't recognize underachievement in a child who receives relatively good grades, but coasts through school....

Teacher, Please Understand My Deep Thinker by Teresa Currivan, LMFT, in Help My Children Thrive
“Once when Clara’s mother happened to be watching Clara’s first-grade teacher assessing Clara’s comprehension skills, there was a misunderstanding about whether water ran ‘over,’ or ‘under,’ the ground. The teacher thought Clara didn’t understand the words ‘under’ and ‘over,’ and said, ‘No, water runs “over” the ground,’ pointing to the very simple book with a picture of a river. Her mother tried to explain that Clara was probably referring to aquifers, where water runs under the ground. She didn’t want to be seen as uncooperative, so she didn’t press the issue.”...

If Only You Knew by Linda Wallin, Living with Geniuses
If Only You Knew how sensitive my children are. If you dislike them, they know. If you think they are bad kids, they know. If they lose a competition, they berate themselves. If they forget their homework, they have already beaten themselves up for being stupid. If they see an eye-roll, they know what it is for. They may not be able to say what they feel because their feelings are intense and revealing them is scary...
