Where can I find statistical data about children with disabilities?

This file includes information about sources of statistical information on education, including special education.

• Center for Special Education Finance (CSEF)
  http://csef.air.org
  CSEF addresses fiscal policy questions and provides information on special education expenditures.

• Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)
  http://www.ccsso.org
  The Council of Chief State School Officers is a nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who lead the departments responsible for elementary and secondary education in the states, the US extra-state jurisdictions, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools. In representing chief education administrators, CCSSO works on behalf of the state agencies that have primary authority for education in each state.

• Disability Statistics Report

  The Disability Statistics RRTC Information Service provides in-depth statistical analyses of national survey and program databases. Reports examine specific topics relevant to current issues in disability research. Reports are mailed to several thousand libraries, information centers, and disability organizations.

• FedStats
  http://www.fedstats.gov
  FedStats is a vast database of statistics from more than 100 U.S. Federal agencies. You can access statistics by the agency responsible for providing them, by topics, or by geographic region.

• IDEA Data

  This website presents the most recent state-reported data available collected by the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), as required under Section 618 of IDEA.

  This publication provides statistical information from a nationwide survey of 1,000 Americans with disabilities, aged 16 and older, that was conducted in April and May of 1998. It is designed to provide comprehensive and up-to-date measures in a number of areas, including: (1) the nature and severity of the disability of people with disabilities; (2) the participation in important life activities, e.g., employment, socializing, financial status, and lifestyles of Americans with Disabilities and how they have changed over the last 12 years; (3) job discrimination and the presence of barriers and unfavorable attitudes in the workplace; (4) familiarity with the Americans with Disabilities Act; (5) special needs of those with disabilities, including equipment, technology, and personal assistance; (6) the sense of common identity shared by adults with disabilties and changes over the past four years; (7) access to health care and satisfaction with services; and (8) participation in religious services.

• National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)

  The Center collects and reports "statistics and information showing the condition and progress of education in the United States and other nations in order to promote and accelerate the improvement of American education."– 402(b) of the National Education Statistics Act of 1994 (20 U.S.C. 9001). This site provides most of the major statistical reports online.
  • Digest of Education Statistics 2002

    Provides a compilation of statistical information covering the broad field of education from prekindergarten through graduate school. Topics in the Digest include: the number of schools and colleges; teachers; enrollments; graduates; educational attainment; finances; federal funds for education; employment and income of graduates; libraries; technology; and international comparisons.

• National Center for Health Statistics, National Health Interview Survey on Disability

• National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO)
  http://education.umn.edu/NCEO/
  NCEO offers information on assessments, accountability policy and practices, national and state data collection programs, and standards-setting for all students, including those with disabilities.

• National Data Resource Center (NDRC)
  ndrc@inet.ed.gov
  Established by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to broaden access to data and information from studies and surveys that NCES maintains. Among other services, NDRC will conduct special analysis on the NCES sets to provide tables and related information. Use of NDRC is most appropriate for well-defined questions that are likely to yield a few tables. This is a free service.

• OSEP 24th Annual Report to Congress

  The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) within the US Department of Education, has oversight for the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). OSEP prepares an annual report to Congress that includes substantial statistical data (number of children identified, etc.) on special education.

• State of the States Gifted and Talented Education Report

  This annual report, published by the Council of State Directors of Programs for the Gifted, contains data on gifted education by state, including state support, state funding, state mandates and regulations, state policies and practices, program population, state and trust territory information, and state contacts. Orders must be accompanied by a check for $25 made payable to CSDPG.

• Study of Personnel Needs in Special Education (SPeNSE)

  Contains extensive information on the nation's general and special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, and special education paraprofessionals as well as information on local efforts to recruit and retain school personnel.

• Twenty-five Years of Educating Children with Disabilities
